Praying Through a Child's Illness

28 Days of Prayer

by Wessel Bentley
Paperback
Healing & Wholeness Prayer Series

Can I trust God when my child is seriously ill? Wessel Bentley knows the agony of this question, and he writes from his own experience of having a child with severe heart problems.

Bentley understands parents' need for spiritual support when they face the tough task of raising a child with a serious illness. He sensitively guides parents through a 28-day process of prayer, reflection, and practical suggestions for coping with their situation.

The four weeks of readings address these themes:

  • Week 1: How Can This Be?
  • Week 2: Who Can I Blame?
  • Week 3: What Can We Do?
  • Week 4: How Can We Live?

Each daily reading supports the weekly theme with a scripture passage, meditation, prayer, and suggestions for deeper thought or practical application. Reflection questions at the back of the book may be used for small-group discussion or further individual exploration.

Praying Through a Child's Illness is a must read for every family dealing with a seriously ill child. Bentley's sensitive reflections will help sustain you through your time of intense difficulty.

Reviews

When our 11-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor, all of the years of ministry experience, study, and reason seemed incapable of offering us the courage and care we needed for the journey ahead. This book of prayers, reflections, and devotions offered us tangible hope and comfort in our time of crisis. Wessel Bentley has woven together a masterful set of inspiring and encouraging reflections that connect the reader with the truth of God’s healing power and sustaining love. I pray that you will find the support and hope that we discovered in these pages.

*Praying Through a Child’s Illness** is a powerful, hope-filled book based on personal experience. I have no doubt that the heartfelt questions posed by Rev. Bentley will reverberate with many parents, grandparents, and family members. Having lived through the experience of a child who is very ill, he speaks with authentic feeling and sensitivity. This book will be an extremely helpful resource for parents all over the world who are facing similar health issues alongside their children.

As much as Wessel Bentley is a deep theologian, he is also a loving, devoted, and down-to-earth father. He is able to share the reality of the huge concerns and worries about his son Matthew’s condition. He then guides parents with ill children through a simple yet amazingly effective, systematic 28-day prayer process of allowing God’s powerful, healing presence to restore peace, faith, hope, and love in every situation and concern. This book is an essential resource for all those who are dealing with family members who are ill.

This is a book of prayer, insight, and support. It is written by a parent who experienced shock, doubt, and helplessness when he discovered that his child was seriously ill. He does not insult the reader with simplistic or unfeeling answers but invites the reader to draw on the strength, love, presence, and wisdom of God. In many practical ways he offers emotional and relational insights that can assist those who are living with the daily pain of a sick and vulnerable child. These meditations can help sustain you in a time of intense difficulty.
